Graeme win inter-schools clash

Two tries from Fetting seals victory

Two tries in the last five minutes from wing Dylan Fetting gave Graeme College a 28-12 victory over visitors Cambridge High School in an inter-schools rugby match.

Graeme started well and early pressure led to an intercept try for centre Joao de Fonseca in the fifth minute. Captain and flyhalf Lorenzo Southey duly converted the first of his four conversions to give Graeme a seven-nil lead.

But the yellow carding of prop Welmont Botes for a deliberate infringement brought Cambridge back into the match as they gained more possession. Cambridge turned this pressure into points in the 25th minute when flyhalf Manelisi Ntukela scored a well-worked blindside try where the ball was worked through a number of phases. This brought the half-time score to 7-5 in favour of Graeme.

Cambridge started the second half well when flank Bulelani Bakaco made an impressive break and linked with eighthman Morne Marais, who scored under the posts. The conversion from centre Leon Mauer made the score 12-7 and Cambridge looked set for an upset victory.

But Southey scored the first of three unanswered tries from Graeme where he ran a good angle from a move off the scrum. Another yellow card to Graeme prop Donovan Comley gave Cambridge a sniff of victory, but they did not manage to use this one-man advantage to score points, although they constantly looked dangerous.

In the last 10 minutes Graeme eventually played the rugby they are capable of showing many examples of the good hands and strong running. Fetting scored the first of his two tries when the ball was worked wide after a tighthead at the scrum. Virtually from the kick-off, Fetting scored in the same left-hand corner after another good backline movement.

Graeme play St. Andrews College this Saturday in an FNB Classic Clash and will need a much-improved and thorough performance if they wish to gain victory.
