Grey beat Graeme in Grahamstown

Match Report

Grey High beat Graeme College 43-19 in Grahamstown on Saturday.

Grey went into a 19-0 lead after 15 minutes through three tries from wing Johan Engelbrecht, fullback Stephen Hunt and centre Tim Whitehead. Grey then replaced Craven Week scrumhalf Marlin Ruiters and this broke the momentum and flow of the game, and Graeme took advantage of this to work their way back into the match.

Graeme loosehead Welmot Botes scored a try from a penalty move, and Graeme dominated the rest of the half. Just before the break Graeme centre Joao de Fonseca was held up over the line, and this proved decisive in the outcome of the match.

Grey looked more cohesive in the early minutes of the second half and scored tries through captain Ryan Christy and Duncan Emslie that gave them a comfortable 31-12 lead.

Throughout the second half the game became more open, with both sides attempting to run the ball at every occasion. Graeme scored from deep in their own half after a long pass to right wing Bradley Birkholtz who ran 50 metres and fed to Lorenzo Southey in support.

The Grey locks, Jan Momberg and Christy, scored their final two tries, but in the middle of this the team missed many points-scoring opportunities. Graeme scored their final try when de Fonseca went over in the dying minutes.
