Grey go to East London

Grey College of Bloemfontein drop off their Highveld with its bitterly cold mornings down to East London on the almost tropical coast.

It is a pleasant journey but there will be more than scenery and sea to occupy the minds of the Grey 1st XV who have lost their last three matches in succession – not by any long chalk a train-smash but certainly an unusual circumstance for the proud rugby school.

There will be more than just the 1st XV match on the visit. There will be 18 rugby matches, eight hockey matches and squash, golf, tennis and chess. But the focus will doubtless be on the 1st XV match which seems to be between two well-matched sides.

Both teams have played 10 matches Grey won six, drew one and lost three. Selborne won seven, drew one and lost two. Grey have had possibly tougher opposition in six Top 20 opponents to Selborne's three. Grey played six teams ranked in the FNB Top 20, Selborne three. The three sides which beat Grey and the two which beat Selborne are all in the Top 20. Selborne is ranked sixth on the FNB Top 20, Grey seventh. Selborne have home advantage but playing all over the country is nothing new to Grey.

It could just be a close match.
