It was the first day of the Grey High Schools Rugby Festival in rain-drenched Port Elizabeth on Saturday with top schools playing interesting matches.

Despite the wet conditions, both sides run the ball in an entertaining fixture.
Kearsney led 24 -8 with 15 minutes to play. But a fine performance by Selvyn Davids ensured a Nico Malan victory.

A hard game with two evenly matched sides. Jaer and Macdonald stood out for Brandwag. Louis Botha were good value for money but the Brandwag defence denied them victory with some solid defence in the second half.

Paul Roos had a convincing win over a game Westville. Paul Roos dominated early on and made it difficult for Westville to get back into the game.

Queen’s proved too strong for a game DHS side. After a poor first half, Queen’s played sensible rugby and captain Joshua Stander controlled the game with some good kicking. The Queen’s backline looked impressive, even in the poor weather conditions and deserved their victory.

Match: Selborne College 12 (6) vs Framesby 10 (0)
Four penalties by Selborne’s fullback, Joshua van Rooyen was enough to see Selborne to a narrow two point win over Framesby.
Framesby scored two tries to the four penalties of Selborne and are clearly going to be a force in Eastern Cape rugby this season. A missed conversion could have seen Framesby snatch a draw at the death.

Match abandoned due to weather conditions.
Match: Hilton College 13 (6) vs Bishops 11 (0)
Bishops came back strongly in the second half, but fell short as Hilton secured a narrow 13-11 victory over their rivals. In the end the difference was a single conversion kick that separated the two sides.

Match: Grey High 32 (22) vs SACS 12 (12)
Three tries by Luyando Odolo and one by Sergeal Petersen insured a comfortable four tries to nil win over rivals SACS.
SACS were better than the score indicated especially early in the second half. Grey deserved their win and will now look to the Marlow game on Monday.
