Grey vs Grey

Some 500 boys with staff to help them will go up from the sea and over the mountains to Bloemfontein as Grey meets Grey in many activities which all climax with the 1st XV match on Saturday afternoon in a Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools match..

It is a great adventure the boys and a great effort by the staff  who are the ones handling the logistics and taking on the responsibility.

Both Greys are named after the popular governor of the Cape, Sir George Grey who was instrumental in the founding of both Grey College in Bloemfontein and the Grey Institute in Port Elizabeth, later called Grey High School. They are both excellent schools and both with great sporting achievements. In recent years Grey College has broken all sports of records for the number of Springboks who are Old Boys of the great school

The two schools started meeting on the rugby field in 1972 – also in Bloemfontein as it happens. Contact after that was sporadic, but since 1972 it has been an annual event. Grey College of Bloemfontein have won far more often than Grey PE but still the boys from the Bay go out to meet the Bloemfonteiners with enthusiasm and in a good spirit.

Grey Bloem are having a poor season, even though it is one that most schools would envy. Both Greys have played 15 matches. Bloem has lost two, PE three. At present Bloem is ranked third on the FNB Top 20, PE 14th. Clearly they both have excellent rugby teams

Results against Common Opponents

Both travel widely and enjoy the challenge of strong teams.

Affies: Bloem lost to them 37-31 PE 31-3

Outeniqua: Bloem lost 22-20, PE 48-15

Boland Landbou: Bloem won 50-13, PE 20-8.

In addition to the two, who beat both, PE lost to Maritzburg College and Wynberg but beat Westville, Paul Roos and St Andrew's of Grahamstown. Grey Bloem has victories over Framesby, Boland Landbou, Monnas, Oakdale and Paarl Boys' High.
