Heiberg gets Director job
Heiberg was the strength and conditioning consultant and Head of Physical Education and has been promoted to Director of Rugby.
Heiberg is a qualified Biokinetisist with vast experience of rugby coaching and conditioning. He is an IRB Level 2 qualified Coach, has a national diploma in Strength and Conditioning, as well as completing a vast number of short courses.
He was born and bred in Cape Town and went to Bergvliet High School where he played rugby.
In 2001 – 2002 he was a voluntary rugby coach at Wynberg Boys High. He went on to become their skills and conditioning coach for the first XV, where he held the position for the following two years.
As part of his compulsory UWC Practicum, he worked as a conditioning assessor for The Western Province Rugby Academy. During this time 2002 – 2004 he was also the conditioning and backline coach for the False Bay first XV C=club Team. This team achieved a third position in the Super League B.
The following two years he was a voluntary assistant trainer for The Hurricanes in New Zealand, assisting with general conditioning coaching.
From 2005 – 2006 he was the conditioning and backline coach for Hamilton’s Rugby club first XV, they won the Super League B title resulting in a promotion to the first division.
In 2005 – 2008 he headed into the classroom as a Physical Education Teacher at Wynberg Boys’ Junior School. At the school he was Head of Rugby for the junior school, coaching the Under-13 A team. He taught general physical education, education learners and their parents on nutrition.
2007 – 2011 he was the conditioning and backline coach for the Villagers Rugby club first Team.
2011 – 2012 he did rugby conditioning for the UCT Varsity Cup team.
2013 he was the assistant coach of the KZN Duikers, who was the Central Conference Winners that year.
2013 – 2014 he was the strength and conditioning coach for the Collegians Rugby club first XV. They reached the Murray Cup Finals and achieved second place in the Cup League, they were the Cup Winners in 2014.
Since 2014 he has been the Head Coach of the Sharks club XV and Head Coach of College Rovers Rugby Club first XV. The Sharks Club team reached the final of the SARU Amateur Provincial Championship for the first time in KZNRU history in 2014.
Heiberg has assisted a number of amateur players that have gone on to play representative rugby.
In his free time he loves spending time with his family, two pugs, a Great Dane and a cat. When time allows it, he plays golf. He is a huge Arsenal fan, thus he tries to watch as many of their games as he can.
Heiberg has been married to Vivienne for 4 years; they met in Cape Town at a ruby club that he was coaching at. Recently they became the proud parents of twin boys, Gabriel and Reuben.
He is very passionate about the game of rugby and ensuring that players develop and reach their full potential on and off the field.
Meanwhile, Jeremy McLaren has been appointed head coach of the Under-19 first XV.
He started his schooling at Grey Primary and matriculated at Sentraal High School, playing for the first XV. He went on to study marketing at the Free State University of Technology, but have never worked in the marketing field. After completing his studies, Jeremy moved to Durban, where he did a three-year course at the Shalom Bible School and worked as a youth leader.
He started his rugby coaching career at Gelofte Skool, working there for 12 years. In 2011 he took up the position as Director of Rugby and first XV Coach at Kloof High School.
McLaren is no stranger to Glenwood. Last year he coached a very successful U16 A team.
Jeremy is a Level two IRB coach and a Level one Sevens IRB coach.
In his free time he enjoys spending time with his fiancé, he loves pizza and if he has the time he will go fishing or play golf.
His coaching philosophy is to reach the boys before looking for the results. He believes that you should invest more in the boys than just a rugby skill. He builds his life around the word respect and would like to instil the value of respect in the boys as well.
McLaren has an illustrious CV which includes coaching jobs at different levels from Grant Khomo to Club rugby. He was Sharks Senior Sevens Assistant Coach (2016), KZN Schools Academy Head Coach (2016), Grant Khomo Head Coach (2015), coached the team to the final, KZN Wildebeest Assistant Coach (2014) coached the team to the final, Senior DSRU coach (2014), KZN Youth Duikers Head Coach (2014), Grant Khomo Assistant Coach (2014) and Duran Rugby Sub-Union (DRSU) coach (2012 / 2013).
While at club level he was Backline Coach for Varsity College Rugby Club (2016), Head Coach at Hillcrest Villagers Rugby Club (2010 – 2015), Winner of the Junior Murray Cup (2015) and Coach at Ballito Dolphins Rugby Club (2005 – 2006).
