Hilton beat College for a change
And they did it at Goldstone's, the feared College ground.
Hilton thus remain unbeaten in seven matches this season.
The truth is that Hilton were even better value for the victory than the score suggests. College came back with pride and the wind late in the second half to score two tries. It was the Hilton pack and their scrumhalf Gareth Schreuder who laid the foundation for the victory, an expected one let it be said ,for College have been struggling this year.
College attacked first, energised by a strong run by their burly eighthman Nthuthuko Mchunu who had an excellent game. But Hilton came back on the attack and their big lock Niaan Taljaard burst away from the tackle and with three opponents hanging onto him scored at the posts. Gareth Schreuder converted. 7-0 after 6 minutes.
After College flyhalf Keagan Collyer kicked a penalty Schreuder scored an exquisite try. College kicked downfield and Schreuder got the ball. He raced back. chipped, grabbed it in the 22, beat two opponents and scored. It was a try of splendid vision and skill. 12-3 after 17 minutes.
Hilton were close again when they mauled from a line-out but lost the ball.
The half-time score was 12-3.
Early in the second half, Schreuder kicked a penalty and then, making it look so simple, flyhalf Ruan Wilmans sold a dummy, cut inside, beat three defenders with sidestep and hand-off and scored. 22-3 after 45 minutes.
But College were not done. Only a tackle by Taljaard at the cornerpost, prevented a try. College stayed on the attack. They mauled from an attacking line-out and Sbu Pinkiney broke away to set up more bashing at the line. Hilton defence was brave, Mchunu was close and then Hilton won a turnover and broke out.
In his own half centre Jacques van der Walt kicked a delicate diagonal to his left. Centre Ethan Heuer caught the ball and gave to Mchunu on his left, and the eighthman raced some 52 metres to score.
At last there was a chance for the white-shirted College boys to hurl their bashers in the air. 22-8 after 59 minutes.
Four minutes later Hilton scored again when powerful Taljaard bashed ahead and diligent Mark Armstrong nipped over. 29-8 after 63 minutes.
A long run by Phelalane Simamane, the College scrumhalf, set his team on the attack. Mchunu and Heuer carried it on and Pinkiney scored on the line. 29-13 with four minutes to play.
Roger Ellis was over for Hilton but the try was disallowed for a forward pass. From a scrum Nkondlo Radebe had a long run. He chipped ahead and Anele Nzimande scored, well after playing time was over.
