Horseflies host Grasshoppers

On Saturday there is the age-old cross-Durban Derby – DHS vs Glenwood, this time at DHS.

DHS have been playing rugby for longer than Glenwood but the rivalry grew naturally between the two schools along Ridge Road.  Glenwood called DHS Horseflies from the many stables in the are and DHS called Glenwood Grasshoppers from a locust plague that at one stage infested the schools playing fields.

In recent years Glenwood's rugby has risen till they are regarded as consistently the best schoolboy side in KwaZulu Natal while DHS have been struggling.  In 2006 DHS won 28-21 but the scores for the last four years tell of Glenwood's superiority – 31-3 in 2009, 31-18 in 2010, 19-5 in 20011 and 34-9 last year. The signs this year point to a Glenwood victory.

Glenwood are ranked in the FNB Top 20; DHS certainly are not. After early battles this season and defeats at the hands of Paul Roos, Drostdy, Garsfontein and Kearsney, Glenwood have beaten Framesby, Michaelhouse, Boland Landbou, Paarl Boys' High and Hilton. They have played strong opponents. On the other hand DHS have lost heavily to Maritzburg College, Westville and Parktown who are not a strong side.

KwaZulu Natal Schools have chosen six teams for the final trials in Pietermaritzburg next Tuesday. From them the KwaZulu Natal Craven Week and Academy Week teams will be chosen and the KwaZulu Natal Country Districts team. Glenwood have 22 at the trial, DHS just their flyhalf Kurt Webster.

Glenwood are without their star fullback for Saturday's match, Corné Vermaak, who was at Craven Week last year.
