Iaan Fourie – Volkskool Graaff-Reinet captain

Player Profile

Graaff-Reinet hosts a FNB Classic Clash on Saturday as Volkskool and Union High meet in the local derby. Iaan Fourie captains Volkskool from the scrumhalf position.

Iaan Fourie was born in Graaff-Reinet on 28 June 1988. He was at the Volkskool junior school where he played mostly wing. He lives at home, is currently in Grade 12 and is also a school prefect. Iaan is a talented all-round sportsman who plays tennis, squash and golf for the school. In addition he partakes in swimming and athletics. He has applied for a sports bursary to Free State University next year where he hopes to study construction management.

Iaan is playing in the second year in the Volkskool 1st XV and he represented EP Country Districts in Humansdorp during the recent school holidays. At 1.80 metres tall and 75kg he is a tall, physical scrumhalf. He has a long, strong pass off both hands and likes to run and link with his forwards. Not surprisingly his favourite player is Fourie du Preez, a player with very similar attributes.

Volkskool got off to a very good start to the season but of late they have been hampered by injuries. They have lost five players to injury and are currently in a four game losing streak, which started on their tour to Namibia. Iaan says their best win of the season came against Hoërskool Rustenburg when they were on tour north of the Vaal.

Volkskool have a strong pack of forwards to whom they will look to secure victory on Saturday. Their backs have stuttered a little this season and although Iaan hopes they will fire on Saturday in the derby, you can bet he'll be using his sniping breaks around the fringes to keep Union High guessing.

This is Volkskool’s last game of the season and Iaan admitted to being a bit stressed in the lead up to this important fixture. The game is played at a neutral venue in the town but as defending champions Volkskool hold the psychological advantage.  With the cards stacked against them slightly Iaan will take any advantage he can get going into the last game of his school career.
