Independent Schools at Bishops

Bishops – the Diocesan College – is in the suburb of Rondebosch, about eight kilometres from the centre of Cape Town.

Twenty teams are taking part, two of which are from Eton College near Windsor Castle, an all-boys, all-boarding school founded by King Henry VI in 1440. The school is famous for two of its very own games, the Wall Game and the Field Game and played more soccer than rugby till fairly recently. Rowing has always been strong at Eton. In 2007 Eton also toured South Africa.

The other schools are all South African.

The festival is biennial, the last one being at Michaelhouse in 2014.

Bishops will host the teams and the matches will be on Bishops fields – the Piley Rees Field which is the main rugby field and named for a famous schoolmaster and rugby coach, the Avenue, which is parallel to the driveway into the school and the Range which is  the field nearest the buildings and at right angles to the Avenue. The Range is so called as the shooting range was next to it in bygone days.

The schools taking part are Clifton (Durban), Michaelhouse (Balgowan in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands), Hilton (outside Pietermaritzburg), St Charles (Pietermaritzburg), Kearsney (Botha's Hill outside Durban, Kingswood (Grahamstown, St Andrew's College (Grahamstown, St Andrew's School (Bloemfontein), Christian Brothers' College (CBC)(Boksburg), St Stithians (Johannesburg), St David's (Johannesburg), St Alban's (Pretoria), Uplands College (White River), Penryn College (Nelspruit), Somerset College (Somerset West) and Bishops, Reddam and Excelsior of Cape Town.
