Independent Schools in Bloem
This year St Andrew's School of Bloemfontein is celebrating its 150th birthday, and part of the celebration is the Independent Schools Rugby Festival, starting on 6 July 2013.
The famous school was founded in 1863 as the Anglican Diocesan Grammar School . In 1874 a Scottish headmaster renamed it St Andrew's. It has not had an unbroken history as in 1899, at the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War it closed and did not reopen till 1916. In 1976, like St Charles, it fell under the government education department but continued in the same vein.
The schools taking part are Clifton College of KwaZulu Natal, Michaelhouse of Balgowan in the KwaZulu Natal Midlands, Penryn College of Nelspruit,, St Alban’s College of Pretoria,: hosts St Andrew's, St Benedict’s College of Johannesburg, St Charles College of Pietermaritzburg, St David’s College of Inanda, St John’s College of Johannesburg, St Stithians College of Randburg, Hoërskool Sentraal of Bloemfontein who are not a part of the Independent Schools organisation but help with the fixtures, Somerset College of Somerset West, Thomas More of Kloof in KwaZulu Natal and Uplands College in White River.
Because of the plethora of rugby festivals in South Africa many of the independent schools are not taking part, including Bishops, Hilton, Kingswood and St Andrew's of Grahamstown.
