Jeppe meet KES in Classic Clash

Jeppe host old rivals King Edward VII in an FNB Classic Clash on Saturday.

It is a match which KES could reasonably expected to win comfortably. The KES side this year is particularly powerful. They have been beaten only by Affies and Pretoria Boys High. At present they are ranked 11th in South Africa amongst a galaxy of great rugby sides. Last year when they were in a similar position they beat Jeppe 35-15. That was at KES but the journey from KES to Jeppe is not long enough to make much of a difference.

Jeppe on the other hand have been battling this year which is not surprising as their team is made up mainly of Grade !! boys, amongst them their captain, Andrew Acton.

For Jeppe it is their last match of the season. KES have one more match – against Parktown next week.

Results against common opponents:

St Alban's: Jeppe lost 22-17; KES won 62-10

Pretoria Boys High: Jeppe lost 40-9, KES 21-17 and 20-17

Affies: Jeppe lost 52-3, KES 15-13

St Stithians: Jeppe lost 26-22; KES won 59-23

That suggests that KES is considerably stronger.

Player achievement:

Craven Week

Jeppe: Emmanual Morowane

KES: Dylan Smith, Malcolm Marx, Bradley Janse van Rensburg, Allistair McQuire, Surprise Mayekiso, Cyle Brink, Wanele Maholwane.

Academy Week

Jeppe: Sibisisu Kunene, Vincent Dlamini, Ameer Williams

That suggests that KES have some outstanding players but they will be without three of them. Prop Dylan Smith and hooker Malcolm Marx will be taking part in the SA Schools trials and flyhalf Marco Engelbrecht.

Prediction: However much it may seem that KES are favourites it is always dangerous to predict in such a derby match.
