KES Ahead in 80-Point Match

Beaten twice by Jeppe High School for Boys in 2018, King Edward VII school came to Jeppe’s packed Collard Field on Saturday and turned the tables on their hosts, winning 49-31, a score which perhaps flattered Jeppe who found the big KES pack a handful.

KES kicked off, Jeppe were penalised and from the lineout tall flank Connor van Buuren was over for a try, before a minute of the match had passed. Three minutes later the other flank Josh Nkomo scored his side’s second try.

Jeppe came back and put pressure on the victors. Prop Sibu Shongwe scored and Jeppe came back to put the pressure back on till KES snatched up a knock-on and ran out of trouble. KES prop Wayne van Niekerk scored and then Jeppe came back with a try in the left corner by fullback Gerath Louw. Then Jeppe scrumhalf Tsoane Tiro darted over for a try near the posts There was still enough time left in the half for bulky prop Van Niekerk to force his way over, and the half-time score was 27-17.

The second half became KES’s game as the forwards took over. Into the last 10 minutes the score was 49-17 to KES but two final tries by Jeppe forward, lock Calvin Kuperus and flank Jarred Haw throne, produced 14 points and restored some honour.
