Kimberley: EG Jansen fights back
The temperature was not yet 10 degrees when the Super Schools Rugby Tournament kicked off at half past seven on a cloudless Kimberley day.
The first match – the breakfast match – saw Monnas lead 10-0 at half-time and eventually beat Boland Landbou though not as heavily as expected but it was the second match that produced the astonishing result.
Grey PE were leading EG Jansen of Boksburg 21-6 and were sharper, more cohesive and more creative. They looked well on the way to a comfortable victory till EG did to them what they had done to Paul Roos a while back. 21-6 to grey became 25-21 to EG with just 40 seconds to play.
Against Paul Roos the player who broke the game wide open was Keanu Vers. He was at fullback but this time he was at centre and did not have the same match-winning impact.
Against Paul Roos, Grey's goal kicking was poor and this time they brought in Garrick Mattheus who converted all three tries, all difficult kicks.
Each side scored three tries, EG's coming with their late surge which for the only time in the game saw them dominate the boys from the Bay.
The only aspect of the game up till then where Grey were not on top was in the line-outs where they were erratic.
Grey's first try came from a tap kick at a penalty slap in front of the EG posts. Delano Kotze kicked a penalty on either side of half-time to take the score to 7-6 but then Junior Pokomela went striding down the midfield and after several sharp bits of handling Jeremy Ward surged over on the right.
From the kick-off EG were penalised and won the line-out and again good handling gave Athi Mayinje an overlap and the wing raced over to score. 21-6.
Their forwards started the EG resurgence. Lock Hendré Stassen was held up over the Grey line which led to two five-metre scrums. EG then went left where Martin van Wyk headed for the left corner. About to be tackled he got a brilliant pass inside to Marco Niemand who gathered in the dipping ball with his left hand and surged over, 21-11 with 9 minutes to play in this 60-minute match.
EG attacked again and had several glaring overlaps before Martin van Wyk dabbed the ball over the line. 21-18 with 4 minutes to play.
EG ran, they won a Grey line-out and ran some more till outside centre Erich Cronjé broke through two tackles to score a try which Forrest Roos converted. With only seconds left, EG led 25-21.
Selborne have been having a good year; Drostdy have not been having a good year, and yet this was a match that the Worcester side could have won, a match in which each side scored a try but in which Drostdy had two exceptional opportunities to score, one taking the option to dummy with a player open and another losing the ball over the line. It was not a match of note.
The match between Oakdale and Noord-Kaap was a thriller as the Kimberleyites got close to the farmers of Riversdale who made the game safe with a seven-pointer two minutes from the end.
Noord-Kaap led 16-0 after 18 minutes before Oakdale came back and with 14 minutes left led 29-23, then 32-23 till Rickus Zwart forced his way through three defenders to make it 32–30 with 7 minutes to go. But fullback Ruan Baard stepped inside and scored to make it 39-30 at the end.
The Paul Roos match against green-shirted KES was as one-sided as the score suggested. The biggest worry for the Stellenboschers was seeing their star scrumhalf Herschel Jantjies limping off when playing on the wing and tackled a metre or two from the line.
The next match was astonishing. It was the one people were keenest to see – Paarl Gim against Affies. It ended a one-sided affair – not as bad as the Paul Roos match but Gimmies, smaller than Affies, had too much skill, sped cohesion and support of one another than the Affies side who had flashed of individual excellence but no teamwork. their fullback Eduan Keyter was brilliant but his brilliance produced only the intercept try when he ran 95 metres to score at a time when Gimmies had a three-man overlap.
Waterkloof scored one try more than Glenwood for their win, Maritzburg College were physically too strong for the boys from the Western Cape and too fast and Grey were more cohesive and incisive than Outeniqua in a match which was somewhat disappointing.
In the last match of the day the home side Diamantveld deserved better than a blank scoresheet but sadly it was not a match of sporting behaviour.
