Kwaggadag in George
The Kwaggas of Outeniqua will leave beautiful George and go over the Outeniqua pass to the ostrich capital of the world, Oudtshoorn and the quiet city will be excited about it. It happens every year – either as Kwaggadag or, as it is this year, Struisiesdag.
The kwagga may be extinct but the rugby Kwaggas of Outeniqua are far from extinct. Year in and year out they are one of the powerhouses of South African rugby. This year again they appear too strong for Oudtshoorn but then the match is in Oudtshoorn and for the Struisies the biggest match of the year.
Season so Far
The sheer statistic does not tell the whole story but it says that Oudtshoorn have played nine and won seven while Outeniqua have played eight and won five. But the quality of the opposition differs greatly,
Outeniqua, now coached by Abrè Minnie who is one of South Africa's top coaches, have played against six sides that have featured on the FNB Top 20 while Oudtshoorn have played none.
Outeniqua have lost to Paarl Boys' High (1st on the FNB Top 20), Affies (3rd) and Garsfontein (11th). They have beaten Waterkloof, Drostdy and Monument.
The teams that have beaten Oudtshoorn are Pearson and Framesby (44-0).
Experience
The 2015 South Western Districts Craven Week side that won two of its three matches, beating Golden Lions and KZN and losing to Eastern Province, was in essence a combination of Outeniqua and Oakdale. Outeniqua had nine in side.
Outeniqua have two of those nine back – Darryl Kameel, who was then a wing and now a fullback, and inside centre JP Duvenhage. Three more in this year's team represented South Western Districts at the Grant Khomo Week – Darryn Fortuin, Louis Meiring and Emileo Otto.
