Last-gasp St Johns edge Parktown
St Johns clinched a thrilling 24-22 victory over rivals Parktown with the last kick of the match in their Classic Clash in Johannesburg on Saturday.
The morning's results built up to what was always going to be a close game but St Johns enjoyed the ascendency throughout most of the day with Parktown only managing to wing two games.
The first XV game started off with much anticipation and some good support from the crowd. St Johns got off to an early lead through a penalty try being awarded and taking advantage of Parktowns' ill-discipline on the line.
St Johns slotted the conversion pushing it out to a 7-0 lead and a few minutes later added a penalty goal, making it 10-0.
St Johns' early dominance continued as they scored shortly thereafter pushing them out to 17-0 up. However, Parktown would have the final say before the break when Michael Madosha scred their first try, leaving the score 17-5 at half-time.
Parktown hit back in fine style in the second half and scored three more tries to take the lead going into the final stages.
Madosha scored a hat-trick and Siyanda Mlambo scored the other try whilst Karaden Mollentze only managed to slot one of the conversions, leaving them 22-17 up with seconds left on the clock.
Parktown were on the attack again when St Johns stole the ball and set up a number of phases, leading to a very dramatic finale which saw them score a try in the far right corner leaving the score at 22-22 with a conversion to come.
St Johns flyhalf Nicholas Zille kicked a pearler of a conversion breaking all the Parktonians' hearts leaving the final score 24-22. This is the one that got away from Parktown considering they missed 15 points with the boot.
