Louis Carstens - Captain of Worcester Gim

Worcester Gim captain Louis Carstens is a true leader – having captained his school’s First XI in the summer and being a prefect too. He is the perfect man to skipper his team in Saturday’s FNB Classic Clashes encounter against Drostdy.

The well-spoken Grade 12 pupil is looking forward to Saturday’s ‘away’ game.

“It might be away, but it’s definitely not too far for our supporters,” he chuckles.

“We’re expecting a lot of support for our school… apparently there should be a crowd of something like 5,000 – all of which adds to the occasion and makes it an even bigger honour for me.”

Louis, whose father is also named Louis, enjoys captaincy and you can see why.

He has captained rugby teams at Under-14, U15 and U16 level – not to mention his abilities as a cricket skipper (he plays as an all-rounder) and his leadership role as a school prefect.

“Captaincy helps me keep my game at a high level,” he says.

When asked about his leadership qualities, Oosthuizen shyly admits: “I think I’m a good motivator… and I’m able to lift my teammates when they need it most. But I’m lucky – I’m captaining a great school and a great team!”

Despite his abilities on the oval-shaped cricket grounds, it’s the oval-shaped ball that Louis enjoys the most.

He would like to continue playing rugby in 2013 – and beyond – as he looks to study teaching at the Teachers’ Training College in Wellington (in the Cape).

“I have a passion to remain involved at school,” he explains, “and I think teaching would be a great way to give something back too.”

Looking ahead to this weekend, Louis is expecting a very physical contest against Drostdy – a side which he says is stronger than ever.

“Nobody will hold back come Saturday,” he warns.

“We haven’t played a lot of rugby this year (as yet), but I think our preparation has been the best in a while. We will be ready and we’re all looking forward to Saturday.”
