Marais Viljoen - Damian Diedericks
Utility back Damian Diedericks is hoping to inspire Marais Viljoen to their first Classic Clash win over Florida for five years on Saturday.
Marais Viljoen have lost the last four Classic Clashes to their rivals, and have their work cut out for them once more with a relatively inexperienced side that has some injuries to key players.
However, Diedericks who represented the Golden Lions at Under-12, U13 and U16 level, believes that the spirit in his side will be a massive factor as they look to turn the tables this weekend.
"Our team spirit is great and our season is going well, much better than previous years, definitely directing in a upward curve," he said.
Leadership is something that comes naturally to Diedericks, who tries to lead from the front.
"I am proud of this achievement and a great honour to lead the 1st XV of Marais Viljoen. As captain I try to be loyal give my best at all times. I lead from the front and never back down," he said.
The Marais Viljoen skipper is equally at home at inside centre or scrumhalf and will be marshalling the backline against Florida who he expects to throw the ball around and play an expansive game.
"We need to stay focused on what we need to do on the field and back the gameplan," he said.
Diedericks, who would like to pursue a professional rugby career after university, says that his proudest achievement in his rugby career is representing the Lions in three different age-groups.
"It is an honour to represent my province and nice to meet and mix with other players," he said.
