Maroon off to Grey

It’s a pleasant 730 km along the Garden Route with glimpses of the Indian Ocean to travel from Stellenbosch to Port Elizabeth. Paul Roos Gymnasium will be doing it this weekend when they go to renew their rugby friendship with Grey High School.

It’s a bit of a migration, this fixture. Apart from 21 rugby teams, there are 21 hockey teams and other activities – golf, debating, fishing, chess, mountain biking, cross country, tennis and squash.

These two great schools have been doing this every year since 2005. For the 1st XVs, it is the 15th match. They drew in 2005, but since then Paul Roos have won eight to Grey’s five. Victory has not always gone to the home side.

In fact, the visitors could win again this year, for Paul Roos seem to have an exceptional side.

Season So Far

In just three matches Paul Roos amassed 186 points, beating two New Zealand sides, Napier Boys’ High 62-7 and Southland Boys’ High 93-5, and Rondebosch 31-7.

Grey drew 17-17 with St Andrew’s of Grahamstown but beat DHS 33-14 and Northwood 43-12.
