Marthines du Preez HTS Springs Captain
Player Profile
HTS Springs host near neighbours and rivals Brandwag in a FNB Classic Clash on Saturday. Flank Marthines du Preez will lead out the hosts.
Marthines du Preez was born in Springs on 12 July 1988 and attended Laerskool Pam Brink. He moved to HTS Springs in Grade 8 and by Grade 10 was playing 1st XV, no mean feat considering he moved from the wing to the flank positiononly in Grade 9. Still only in Grade 11, naturally Marthines considers it a great honour to captain the 1st XV.
Marthines missed the Falcons Craven Week trials this year because of a hand ligament injury. Marthines is a big tackling No.6 who steals turn-over ball as a bonus. He also like to run and is always looking for opportunities to get ball in hand. His favourite player is the Bulls and Bok flyer Bryan Habana because “he wants to have speed like him one day.”
HTS Springs have a well-balanced team this year who according to Marthines work well together. Unfortunately untimely injuries meant their season got off to a bad start and they have lost five of their ten games played. Their best win to date coming over Oostelig (17-14), when they finally played to their full potential as a team.
Marthines wants to follow in his uncle’s footsteps and go into the police force when he finishes school. He wants to study and eventually practice psychology through the police.
Having lost last year’s FNB Classic Clash, HTS Springs are “psyched-up” for this weekend’s encounter. It is a big grudge game and 1 500 people are expected to turn out to cheer on their heroes. Marthines du Preez is definitely one of them!
