New 7s at SACS

Backed by their Old Boy Kyle Brown, who captains the Blitzbokke, the inaugural SACS Sevens will be a quadrangular tournament for the Under-14, Under-15 and Under-16 teams of the four Southern Suburbs rivals – Bishops, Rondebosch, SACS and Wynberg. The four are much the same sort of school, competing at all sorts of activities, most notably at rugby. This adds to the competition.

SACS, who this year have been the best-performing of the four on the rugby field have taken the initiative to establish the SACS Sevens Quadrangular Tournament in association with Kyle Brown Sevens Rugby to be played at SACS on Saturday, 5 September 2015 when there will be 30 matches between 09.00 and 16.30.

During the lunch break a charity match between Kyle Brown 7s and UR7s South Africa will take place. Kyle will be refereeing this special match. All proceeds and money raised will be donated to the #AllinForG campaign which is affiliated with the Petro Jackson Chris Burger Fund.

Sevens has come a long way since its invention in 1883 by a Scottish butcher, Ned Haig of Melrose, because of the town's inability to raise a team of 15 men to play rugby. Next year it will be, for the first time, an Olympic sport at the games in Brazil. Much has been done to popularise the sport through the World Rugby Sevens, and much was done in South Africa through the schools. The Villager Sevens, started in 1968, did most to make Sevens popular. It is interesting that rugby as a game has come from the schools and possibly still is at its idealistic best when played at schools. (The Villager Sevens is on Friday, 4 September 2015.)

Barry Van Selm, Head of SACS Rugby, has welcomed such an innovative and exciting tournament. "SACS is very excited to be able to launch this fantastic quadrangular Sevens tournament along with Kyle Brown Sevens. The great rivalry that already exists between the four Southern Suburbs boys' schools, will now be even greater with the introduction of this tournament. We hope that families and supporters will come down and whilst watching some Sevens Rugby, also sample the food and beverages available, from some of Cape Town's best food trucks."
