NuPower series kicks-off
The first round of the NuPower/Tuks series started this weekend with the titleholders, Waterkloof of Pretoria, kicking off with an impressive victory.
This prestigious school rugby series started in 1997 when a few headmasters decided that they would like their schools to have more rugby exposure. The idea was that if more matches are being played the quality of their rugby teams would benefit directly from this new competition. Schools from Mpumalanga, North West, Limpopo and Gauteng participate.
Twelve schools joined the series and the first final, played at Ermelo High School, was won by the hosts.
In 1999, the series was expanded to sixteen schools. Tukkies became a major sponsor in 2000 and in 2008 NuPower Solar Solutions, a leading solar company in SA, became the main sponsor in conjunction with Tukkies.
In 1998, the tournament was expanded to include netball, tennis, hockey, golf, chess and cross country and is now played over 10 weeks with the semifinals and finals held at LC de Villiers Stadium, the home of Tukkies sport.
This tournament creates opportunities for many young sporting women and men over a wide spectrum of sporting codes to compete on a high level. Great friendships are forged between schools, pupils and sponsors.
