Oakdale win in the Karroo
The two agricultural schools met in an FNB Classic Clash at Landbou Marlow outside of Cradock, and Oakdale of Riversdale won 14-9 in a tight encounter.
This was the 10th annual clash between the two schools, one in the sheep land of the Great Karroo, the other among the mixed farms of the gentle South Western Districts.
Unlike the weather in the Western Cape the Cradock weather was sunny, the field was dry and the temperature warm enough for good rugby as it looked out over the hills nearby.
Oakdale scored the only tries of the match, both in the first half which they ended leading 14-9. There was just a solitary penalty goal in the second half. Of his side's 17 points, scrumhalf Pierre du Toit scored 12.
Du Toit opened the scoring early in the match as his side attacked sharply And was hammering at the Marlow line when he picked up wriggled and dived for the try. He converted his own try. 7-0 after 6 minutes.
Two ,long penalties, the first from the half-way line, by Dirk van Wyk made the score 7-6 after 25 minutes.
There was a loose ball in the Oakdale half with Marlow putting on pressure when Oakdale prop Nemo Roelofse snapped up the ball, shook off a tackler and raced straight down the middle of the field, chased by Wolramme who did not gain on him, till he scored a remarkable try under the posts. 14-9 after 28 minutes. That was the half-time score.
Marlow came close to scoring a try in the second half, in fact were over the try-line. threw kicked from their own half deep down towards Oakdale's right corner. Peet Schoeman chased the ball, the ball bounced away from Oakdale and Schoeman got it. As he was about to be tackled he played infield to Ockert du Preez who was over ,but the referee called them back for a forward pass. That was blow for the Wolramme.
Oakdale had a line-out five metres from the Marlow line and Marlow ere penalised for an air tackle. Du Toit goaled. 17-9 with just 7 minutes to play.
