Old Schools Meet in Newlands

On Saturday, Wynberg will go across to SACS for the first of their two matches scheduled for this year. They are two ancient schools in South African terms.

SACS is the oldest school in South Africa, founded in 1829, Wynberg the second oldest, founded in 1841.

Both schools play in similar jerseys with blue and white stripes, Wynberg’s slightly broader than those of SACS. To avoid a clash, the visitors play in white jerseys, as Wynberg will do this week.

The schools have a common zest for the game – to run with the ball in hand andf both are schools willing to play anybody.

Season So Far

SACS have played 10 matches, winning and losing five.
Wynberg have played nine matches, winning three, drawing one and losing five.

SACS’s best performance may well have been in defeat, Wynberg’s in a draw.

Last Saturday, SACS lost to the excellent Paarl Gim side but did really well and in fact were leading 19-17 at half-time, after which Gim took over.

Wynberg’s excellent draw was with Grey High of Port Elizabeth, an annual fixture for the two schools. The score in that lavish draw was 27-all.
