Paul Klaase - Schoonspruit Captain

Player Profile

Schoonspruit of Malmesbury play Wesbank of Malmesbury in an FNB Classic Clash on Saturday, an exciting derby for the Boland town.

Schoonspruit skipper Paul Klaase is a confident man. Leading a side that has lost only one match this season into battle in the local Malmesbury derby against Wesbank, he says his team are taking this match just like any other.

Born in Morreesburg on 12 October 1986, where he attended Laurie Hugo Junour School, Paul Sylvester Klaase has always played on the flank. Currently in Grade 12, he obviously takes his rugby seriously as he moved to Schoonspruit on a bursary two years ago.

Although he has captained all the teams he has played in over the last couple of years he still finds captaincy a challenge – a challenge he is happy to accept and one he obviously relishes.

Paul is a “fetcher” flank who prides himself on his ball skills and strong defence. Naturally he models his play on South Africa’s premier exponent of the art of fetching and 2004 IRB Player of the Year, the incredible Schalk Burger. When discussing the weekend Interschools game Paul was loathe to single out any aspect of his team’s play as a particular strength. He prefers to emphasise that his team are a well-balanced unit who pride themselves on their ability to play total rugby.

Paul dreams of one day studying to be an electrician. He would love to attend a college in Cape Town and is hopeful that his rugby and academic prowess will enable him to obtain a bursary to do so. If he can add an inter-schools win to his already impressive CV, he will surely be another step closer to realising his dream.
