Paul Roos in another huge win
The score, 44-8, undervalues Boys' High's effort and courage, but Paul Roos were simply too fast and too direct in establishing the biggest win of recent time over their Paarl rivals.
Boys' High have nothing to be downhearted about as their achievements of recent years will stay and be worthy of great admiration. All that happened was that they lost to a better side, an outstanding side.
Paul Roos attacked first, scored first and led throughout the match. At half-time the score was only 16-8 with a try apiece, but Paul Roos rook over the second half, scoring 28 unanswered points from, four tries.
Paul Roos bashed their way up the field with pick-'n-go and then a quick pass by Brendan Venter sent speedy Tiaan Pretorius over in the left corner. Fullback Kade Wolhuter, whose kicking in the match was excellent, goaled from touch. 7-0 after 6 minutes.
A Wolhuter penalty made it 10-0 but then Boys' High scored a wonderful try that resulted from skilled interplay between backs and forwards as eighthman Gideon van Wyk gave to wing Carlu Uys who gave back inside to Van Wyk who scored. 10-5.
A penalty by Wolhuter, a penalty by Kian Meadon and another penalty by Wolhuter on the stroke of half-time made the score at the break 16-8.
It did not take Paul Roos long to add to their lead. Hooker and captain JJ Kotze had a powerful charge down the right. They went wide left and Wolhuter was over for a try in the left corner, which he, inevitably it seemed, converted.
At this stage Boys' High looked startled while Paul Roos were composed as if knowing they would win.
For all that, there was a strong element of luck in the next score.
Tall Juan Mostert, a Henry Honiball-esque flyhalf kicked a horrible drop at goal which was touched by Boys' High but which Boys' High dotted down in in-goal. This produced a five-metre scrum. Bezuidenhout was close but there was no stopping powerful Mink Scharink. 30-8 after 50 minutes.
A penalty gave Paul Roos an attacking line-out from which Matthew Cordy scored.
Mostert raced off on a long run down the left till an ankletap flattened him. Paul Roos went wide right where Kotze burst through three defenders to score. 44-8 with 6 minutes to play.
