Paul Roos in big final win

Match Report

Paul Roos, ranked top of the FNB Top 20, beat Marlow of Cradock 50-12 in the Big Schools final of Die Burger's competition which stretches from Western Province to Eastern Province.

The match was played at the Markötter Fields in Stellenbosch on Saturday morning.

The Marlow forwards were powerful in set pieces but Pail Roos had too much skill when the ball left the packs.

Till half-time on the hot morning it was still a contest. At the break Paul Roos led just 7-0.

The second half was a different kettle of fish as Paul Roos went on the attack, scoring another seven tries as their backs ran great lines and their loose forwards gave support and quick possession.. The backs scored five of the eight tries, flank Siyasanga Mkiva another. That left two tries for the tight forwards – one for lock Jaco van Vuuren and one for massive Stephan Hamman.

Marlow were brave throughout, their efforts rewarded by two tries. Hooker Graeme Heyneke got one, prop Ulrich Pretorius the other.

Marlow missed their flyhalf Jan du Toit who could not play because of concussion.

Speaking of the match afterwards top referee Jonathan Kaplan said: "I loved it. That would be one of the top three schoolboy matches I have refereed."
