Pieter Oosthuizen - Captain of Wolmaransstad

Hoerskool Wolmaransstad captain Pieter Oosthuizen is a well-built tighthead prop who loves to scrum. But he also loves to run with the ball.

Oosthuizen will lead his team into battle in Saturday’s FNB Classic Clashes encounter against Hoërskool Schoonspruit in Klerksdorp, which he describes as a “massive moment”.

“We’re ready,” he says, “we’ve trained well this week and we’re all looking forward to Saturday.”

The 110 kilogram prop – who stands 1,80 metres tall – does not see the captaincy as an extra burden, having served as his team’s skipper virtually throughout his school career.

He also does not think playing away will be an issue either, saying: “Yes, they won’t stand back, as they’re playing at home, but neither will we!”

As a powerful prop, the anchor of the scrum at tighthead, Pieter admits that scrumming is his bread – or as he said in Afrikaans, “Skrum is my kos!” – but, as mentioned above, he also loves any chance he gets with ball in hand.

With this in mind, it is thus no surprise that his rugby hero is Cheetahs prop – and namesake – Coenie Oosthuizen; a powerful prop who can play on either side, but is equally nimble when given the chance to show his skills.

“I do love running with the ball,” he says, “but as a tighthead prop I do know my core responsibilities (too).”

Next year Pieter will in all likelihood join the well-known Pukke Rugby Academy in Potchefstroom – an opportunity to study and play rugby.

The obvious aim is to play Varsity Rugby – either at Under-20 or senior level – but he would also relish the chance of playing Koshuisrugby in the enjoyable Steinhoff Koshuisrugby Championships.
