Plenty of tries under sunny skies

The Tony Stoops Rugby Festival presented by C2M Chartered Accountants Inc. opened in warm weather in Parow on Saturday 29 March 2014.

In Parow the feature game saw Paarl Boys’ High and Noord-Kaap play out a thrilling 19-19 draw, even though the visitors enjoyed a huge advantage in the penalty count.

No side was allowed to exercise any real dominance, even though the Kimberley unit was considerably larger.

Earlier, Rondebosch did not have things all their own way, having to be content with a 21-0, three-try victory, over a Worcester Gym side already severely hampered by injuries. Zain Davids scored two of the local side’s tries.

Wynberg gave notice of their attacking intentions, running in eight tries against a game but severely outgunned Swartland side. Hooker Bevan Barnard put in the individual performance of the day, dotting down four times, while fullback Karl Martin’s sixteen points showed that he intends to pick up this season from where he left off in 2013.

Probably the most impressive performance of the day came from Piketberg, who destroyed Despatch 50-12 in the early game on the main field in the process, earning themselves a plum fixture against Rondebosch on Monday.

The hosts, Tygerberg, were made to fight every inch of the way before recording a nail-biting 26-20 triumph over festival newcomers Sasolburg High. Tries by loose forwards Uwe Geissler (2) and Juanro Augustus eventually won the day.

Other largely unheralded teams that deserve honourable mention include Jan van Riebeeck, who trounced Otto du Plessis 29-0, and Vredenburg, who swung the ball around attractively on their way to a 35-9 win against Table View.
