Preview: Easter Monday at Kearsney

Four teams – Grey College, Monument, Glenwood and HTS Middelburg – go unbeaten into the final day of the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival. In what is being dubbed the clash of the titans, Grey and Monument will play each other in the penultimate match of the festival, which kicks off at 14.30.

The match between Grey College and Westville Boys’ High provided some wonderfully exciting rugby on Saturday. With the score 20-20 with eight minutes to go, the experienced Grey team maintained their composure, taking their opportunities to ensure a final winning score of 32-20. Grey can expect an even tougher encounter on Monday, with Monument having played some superb rugby at the festival, to beat Framesby Hoërskool and Affies.

At midday Westville will face Selborne College from East London, who have lost to Affies and beaten Framesby at the festival.

Glenwood’s defence was tested on Saturday with EG Jansen’s relentless attacking. On Monday the local team play Framesby from Port Elizabeth who, in spite of two losses at the festival, have displayed some moments of brilliance and sustained pressure on opposition.

In the final fixture of the festival, host team Kearsney College will take on Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen, the Boksburg team who play a very physical brand of rugby. Kearsney had an excellent win against Dale College on Saturday, with both teams providing spectators with a feast of running rugby.

Kicking off the day’s play, Nico Malan from Humansdorp will face Dale College from King William’s Town. Both teams will have something to prove, having lost both their fixtures at this festival.

The first game of the afternoon session sees Affies take on HTS Middelburg, which should provide some quality play. Middelburg has won both its fixtures and Affies won its first, but lost to Monument in an exciting encounter on Saturday.

Selectors from The Sharks and Sharks Academy have been in attendance at all festival games. The recipients of three bursaries, each valued at over R100 000, will be announced after the final game. This includes a contract with the Academy for 2015, accommodation and a tuition bursary with one of its education partners.
