Preview: Kearsney Festival, Day 3

Three teams go through to the final day unbeaten – two local sides DHS and Glenwood, as well as Hoërskool Framesby from Port Elizabeth.

Despite Saturday’s rain and misty weather, the well-organised event has attracted good crowds to Botha’s Hill where 12 of the country’s notable rugby-playing schools are participating. Good weather is forecast for tomorrow (Monday).

All three KwaZulu-Natal school teams won their fixtures on Saturday. A 39-0 score-line belies the good fight put up by Dale College against Glenwood on Saturday; DHS dominated play against Queen’s College, scoring three tries to one, to win 24-7; whilst the third local team, hosts Kearsney College, beat Hoërskool Noord-Kaap 20-11.

First up tomorrow (Monday) are Glenwood and Welkom Gimnasium at 9.30am. Glenwood has beaten HTS Drostdy and Dale College in the tournament so far.

A strong looking DHS team has had a successful outing, with wins against Selborne and Queen’s College. They face a third Eastern Cape school when they play Dale College at 13.15. Dale will have something to prove, having lost both matches so far at the festival.

Kearsney narrowly lost to HTS Middelburg in the fading moments of the opening game of the festival; but beat Hoërskool Noord-Kaap on Saturday. Kearsney supporters will be hoping their team can bring a successful conclusion to the festival in the final match against Pretoria Boys, kicking off at 3.45pm. Both these teams have won one and lost one festival game and will be keen to improve their tally.

The penultimate game of the festival, between HTS Drostdy from Worcester and Selborne College from East London, should provide some exciting rugby. Both teams will be hungry for their second win of the weekend. Selborne narrowly lost to DHS and had a confident win against HTS Middelburg. HTS Drostdy also had a narrow first day loss to Glenwood, but a solid win against Welkom Gimnasium on Saturday.

Selectors from The Sharks and Sharks Academy have been in attendance at all festival games. The recipients of three bursaries, each valued at over R100 000, will be announced after the final game. This includes a contract with the Academy for 2019, accommodation and a tuition bursary with one of its education partners.

Gate entry is R25 per person. Ample secure parking will be available; as well as numerous food outlets, a beer tent and KidZone to ensure a fun-filled family-orientated Easter Monday.
