Profile: Barno van der Westhuizen

On Saturday it is up to the captain's to lead from the front and Piketberg's Barno van der Westhuizen is completely aware of this.

It is going to be an interesting affair when Schoonspruit host Piketberg in their FNB Classic Clash on Saturday and the captain is ready for everything that Schoonspruit are going to throw at them.

"We have been preparing really well this week and the team is ready for the weekend.

"It is always a big game when we play against Schoonspruit and we are hoping that we can produce a solid performance that we can be proud of," Van der Merwe said.

Rugby has always been in his blood and he has been involved since he was in Grade one and has not looked back.

"I have played rugby since Grade one and ever since I can remember I have played No.8.

"Growing up playing rugby means that I have been able to learn so much over the years and that is very important," he added.

The Piketburg 1st XV have not had the best of seasons so far and Van der Merwe is aware of this.

"We have had a good season so far, but it has not been great and we have had some unlucky results which have not helped us," he mentioned.

A derby game of this nature is always going to be a highlight in a young rugby players career and the former Boland Under-16 player is no different.

"I am really looking forward to the game this weekend. It is something that will be really important for me and for the team and I hope we can play well," he concluded.
