Queen's frolic

Match Report

The Queen’s 1st XV went on a try scoring spree in the first half of their match against the visiting Port Rex, to record a convincing 36-7 victory, after leading 24-0 at halftime.

The match was expected to be a much closer contest, but Queen’s took the game by the scruff of the neck, and dictated play from start to end. Port Rex failed to find their rhythm and had to be content with little ball and single-phase rugby. Queen’s on the other hand, enjoyed an abundance of possession, treating spectators to some fine running rugby, despite the bitterly cold, wintdy conditions.

Queen’s dominated the line-outs with lock Mathew Lutge prominent as always. Although the scrums were evenly contested in the first half, the stronger Queen’s front row took control in the second half, resulting in poor back-foot ball for Port Rex. One area of the game in which Port Rex were competitive was at the point of breakdown.

Despite some courageous tackling from the visitors, Queen’s played with much confidence with many creative passages of play between backs and forwards which resulted in six excellent tries.

The four first half tries were scored by Leandro Less in the 4th minutes, Darryl van der Mescht in the 9th, Setu Skepe in the 25th, and Murray Weakley just on halftime.

Second half tries were scored by Van der Mescht (his second) and Mayibuye Ndwandwa. Lionel Cronje converted three of the tries.

Queen’s will have their hands full when they meet a rejuvenated Selborne combination in East London on Saturday 29 July. They will be absolutely determined to secure the “double” against their arch rivals, but will be well aware of the fact that Selborne have played with much more cohesion in recent outings and will have the added benefit of homeground advantage.
