Queen's go on the rampage

Match report

Queen's College of Queenstown beat Cambridge of East London 77-3 in Queenstown on Saturday.

The visiting Cambridge team from East London found themselves at the receiving end of a rampant Queen’s team in an inter-schools match played at the Recreation Ground on Saturday afternoon.  Queen’s totally overwhelmed their opposition, dominating all facets of play and put together a performance that can only be described as scintillating.  Cambridge have had a poor season and, although Queen’s were probably expected to win comfortably, it was the manner in which they ran in try after try, that impressed.

A total of 13 outstanding tries were scored by Queen’s – seven in the first, and six in the second half giving an indication of the one-sidedness of the game.  Left wing Alex Hattingh had an abundance of good clean ball and was responsible for three of his team’s tries, while centre Leandro Lee, fullback Kholo Ramashala and flank Glenn McEwan scored two each.  Flyhalf Lionel Cronjé’s personal tally amounted to 17 points through a try and six conversions.  The remainder of Queen’s tries were scored by No 8 Mzothando Simani, right wing Mayibuye Ndwandwa and scrumhalf Michael Faca.

Playing with tremendous rhythm and momentum, many of Queen’s tries came as a result of good linking between backs and forwards.  Another striking feature of their game was the excellent ball handling and control of the Queen’s players, who certainly vindicated themselves after last week’s indifferent performance.

With very little possession and territory, Cambridge were forced into a defensive mode for much of the game and much of the ball that they were able to secure was on the back foot, making it even more difficult for them.
