Queen's host Dale

It's one of those great Border derbies this weekend – Queen's College against Dale College in an FNB Classic Clash. It's one of the great events of the rugby season in the region.

Once a year Queen's go down the N6 the 142 km to King William's Town and once a year Dale go up the N6 into the mountains. This time it's Dale's turn to travel. It is a match which attracts intense interest. Both are traditional boys' schools with a strong boarding component in fairly small towns. Inevitably they elicit fierce loyalty from the boys at the schools and from the schools' Old Boys – the Old Queenians and the Old Dalians.

The two sides have met once this year, and Dale won in King William's Town.

The Season

Both sides are amongst the top teams in South Africa. Dale are at present ranked 7th on the FNB Top 20, queen's, who have been on the Top 20, are ranked in the small group just below the Top 20.

Queen's had a battle early in the season when they lost three in a row – to Paul Roos, Kearsney and Glenwood but then they beat Selborne and Grey PE. Dale have had a consistent season with just one defeat.

Results against Common Opponents

Cambridge: Dale won 31-8, Queen's 34-7

Glenwood: Dale drew 24-24; Queen's lost 32-12

Grey PE:  Dale lost 22-9; Queen's  won 22-19

Hudson Park: Dale won 24-10; Queen's drew 13-13

Marlow: Dale won 6-3, Queen's 23-9

Paul Roos: Dale drew 27-27; Queen's  lost 43-20

Port Rex: Dale won 59-10 and 64-15, Queen's 52-10

St Andrew's: Dale won 22-20; Queen's  lost 31-18

Selborne: Dale won 10-9, Queen's 29-7

Stirling: Dale won 26-0, Queen's 78-3

That all suggests that there will not be a lot in it.

Higher Honours

The selection this year was seriously affected by the Border decision, made known a month before, Craven Week that boys who were in contract with other provinces would not be selected. Two of those were the Queen's outstanding halves, Joshua Stander and JP Smith, both of whom played for border in 2011 and both of whom will be playing  against Dale.

Both schools are in the Border area;
