Queen's win ancient derby

Queen's College of Queenstown went down to Dale College of King William's Town and won their FNB Classic Clash 23-10.

It was the 171st match between the two great schools since the first in 1891 and it was Dale's Reunion Day when Old Dalians gather in love and admiration of their school. Dalians are a particularly loyal community,

For the second time Dale wore pink – pink jerseys, pink shorts and pink headgear. This initiative was founded by the well-known Old Dalian sportsman Steve Palframan to encouraging awareness of and raise funds for dealing with cancer. The team also wore random numbers to signify the random way cancer strikes. The scrumhalf wore 1, a flank 11 – and so on.

The final score looks like a comfortable win for the visitors but in fact it was not, for Dale can play with determination, as they did.

Dale in fact scored first. Queen's were penalised at a tackle. Dale tapped and ran. Queen's were not back 10m and so the kick, in front of the posts, was better for being closer. The Dale flyhalf, Courtney Winnaar, who had a splendid game in all facets of flyhalf play, goaled. 3-0.

At this stage Dale looked the sharper, more enterprising of the two teams and attacked with vigour but Queen's calm defence kept them out. Winnaar broke sharply but then it was Queen's turn to attack and Bolze levelled the scores at 3-all after 22 minutes.

Again Winnaar broke at speed on a long run but again Queen's kept Dale out. In fact it was Queen's who scored next when left wing Sikhokele Ngozi raced down the left and gave to Kyle Brown who was tackled five metres from the line. Queen's surged in and the ball came back to Ngozi who stepped in and out to beat a big man and score in the left corner. 8-3 after 36 minutes, which was the half-time score.

When Dale were offside early in the second half, Queen's attacked but knocked on just short of the line. That gave Dale a scrum five metres from their line but they infringed at the scrum and were freekicked. Queen's tapped  and huge eighthman Sean Nkomo forced his way over for a try which Bolze converted. 15-3 after 52 minutes.

A penalty to Dale gave them a five-metre scrum. They went right where prop Kuhle Mokhoabane got a clever offload to Sango Mtotywa who scored in the right corner. Winnaar did well to convert and the score was now 15-10 with 14 minutes to play. Two minutes later Bolze kicked a simple penalty from slap in front and then near time, when Dale had a player in the sin bin for cheeking the referee,  Queen's went on a raid of simple, short passes that produced a double overlap and a try for Siphuxolo Zaula.
