Queen’s win at Stirling
Queen’s College 1st XV continued their run of good form with a convincing 50-7 victory over Stirling in East London on Saturday.
The team has shown through their convincing victories over the likes of Maritzburg College and St Andrew’s that they are a force to be reckoned with this year and take good momentum with them into the historic Cape Schools’ Week in Paarl.
Five minutes before kick-off, what had been a perfectly still warm East London winter’s day changed dramatically with the arrival of a gale force westerly wind. Queen’s adapted well and played beautiful ball-in-hand ,running rugby to score four first-half tries. Wings Lilitha Jonas and Jerry Danquah, flyhalf and captain Simon Bolze and powerful eighthman Justin Hollis dotted down for the men in white. Two of these were converted by Bolze for Queen’s to lead 24-0 at half time.
Queen’s started the second half in a similar vein, dominating all facets of play and showing good linking between forwards and backs. This resulted in a try for hard working scrumhalf Kewan Gibb. Bolze converted to take the score to 31-0.
Stirling came back into the game at this stage and began to string some phases together. This resulted in a try for centre Ethan Gwatkin which was converted by flyhalf Mmiselo Mangisa.
The last 15 minutes of play saw Queen’s back into an unstoppable rhythm resulting in a further try by loosehead prop Tiaan Bartman and second tries of the day for Hollis and Danquah. Two of these were converted by Bolze to complete Queen’s 50 point total.
