Queen's win well
The Queen’s College 1st XV recorded a very good 30-19 win over their highly rated St Andrew’s College opposition on the Recreation Grounds on Saturday afternoon.
Queen’s College made better use of the weather conditions on the day by using the strong wind in the first half to their advantage and then defending manfully and taking their opportunities in the second.
St Andrew’s lock, captain and main lineout jumper, SintuManjezi, was injured in the first 10 minutes of the game and was forced to leave the field. Queen’s took full advantage of this and were able to dominate the lineouts and secure their own ball without too much fuss.
Simon Bolze, the Queen’s flyhalf, had an early opportunity to put the first points on the board but pulled the kick across the face of the posts. This was his first missed kick in 15 attempts. He went on, however, to convert three penalties within the first 20 minutes to give Queen’s a 9-0 lead.
The first try of the match was scored by St Andrew’s after some good work by their forwards. The conversion missed which meant the score stood at 9-5 in favour of Queen’s after 24 minutes of play. Some very good work by the Queen’s pack of forwards set up the opportunity for centre Kyle Brown to crash over for a fine try just before the break. Bolze converted to take the half-time score to 16-5 in favour of Queen’s.
Playing with the gale force wind at their backs the second half saw early domination by St Andrew’s and in so doing they were able to record their second try of the afternoon, this after some slick handling by their backs. The conversion was good and the Queen’s lead decreased to just four points.
The Queenians found some space to attack out wide and a great 30m run by tighthead prop Dancan Mureguzi saw him crash over in fine style for Queen’s second try. Bolze again was on target with the conversion to extend the lead to 23-12 with 20 minutes left in the game.
To the credit of St Andrew’s they bounced back and were able to score a try which was converted to take the game into an exciting final 15 minutes. Queen’s were up 23 – 19 at this stage. A good backline move saw Jerry Danquah on the left wing get the ball and break two tackles. He then ran a magnificent line to score under the posts. Bolze converted to take the score to 30-19.
With time running out, the St Andrew’s team threw everything into their attack and only some resolute defence by Queen’s kept the St Andrew’s team from adding to their total. A red-card to Queen’s loose-head prop Siyavuya Mlwayo, with 13 minutes left to play, was a rare lack of discipline shown by the Queen’s team on the day.
The team can be well pleased with their efforts.
Queen’s play their final fixture of the term when they travel to East London to take on Stirling High on Saturday. Queen’s will be looking to continue their run of good form before heading to Paarl for the historic Cape Schools’ Week Festival.
