Rickus Theron – Captain Hoërskool Brits

Player Profile

Hoërskool Brits travel to Hoërskool Wagpos on Saturday for a FNB Classic Clash. Rickus Theron captains Brits from the loosehead position.

Rickus Theron was born in Pretoria on 26 June 1987. Almost immediately after his birth his parents moved to Brits, where he attended Laerskool De Kroon. In Grade 8 he was admitted to Hoërskool Brits.

Rickus plays loose-head prop and has played for the 1st XV for the last three years. He represented the Leopards Craven Week team in 2004 as an Under-17 player. He was unable to make the team last year but is assured of being at Craven Week this year. The Leopards have chosen their provisional team and when we spoke to him he was on his way to a squad session.

Rickus can only ever remember playing at loosehead prop and says that he considers his scrummaging and his ability to break loose and attack from rucks and mauls as his strengths. Somewhat surprisingly his two rugby heroes are backline players who he admires for their superb support play. His all-time hero being the Rolls Royce of fullbacks André Joubert, while his current idol is Dan Carter of the Crusaders and New Zealand.

Rickus is extremely happy with the team he has this season and reckons that they are the best team ever assembled by Brits. He enjoys leading the team and says it is the best feeling he could ever imagine when he leads them out. According to Rickus Brits started the season well but their results took a bit of a dip as a result of injuries. Their best result to date is a 27-0 win over Potchefstroom Gimnasium.

Rickus feels they are getting things together again and he is confident going into the biggest game of the season against Wagpos. Brits won last years game 24-5 and although Brits are away at Wagpos this year they must still be favourites.

Rickus wants to coach rugby as a career and to that end has already done some coaching courses. He intends to doing more courses next year while coaching the youngsters of Brits. He has not decided where he will play next year as for now his focus is entirely on Saturdays FNB Classic Clash.
