Rondebosch Easily Sink SACS

Rondebosch Boys’ High comfortably overcame the South African College High School (SACS) in their second encounter of the season by 24 points to five (half time: 17-0).

Rondebosch had beaten SACS on their Tinkie Heyns Field last term and would have expected a ferocious onslaught from their hosts in the return match but SACS were strangely subdued on the day and were rolled over with relative ease. Rondebosch had not won since the two teams last met in May and one would have expected SACS to climb into them and play on their fragile confidence but the match was never really a contest as Bosch looked a hungrier and better team throughout.

Rondebosch hooker Troy Fisher opened the scoring on ten minutes from a lineout variation executed five metres form the SACS tryline. The conversion was missed. SACS built some pressure from the kick-off and received an easily kickable penalty, which they inexplicably chose to kick to touch for no reward.

It was Rondebosch’s other barnstorming ball-carrier Lukhanyo Vokozela who easily burst through the SACS defence to set up the visitors second try on twenty-three minutes. He created front-foot ball, which was flung to the right where wing Jake Tredoux scored. The conversion was again missed. Alarm bells were ringing for SACS who look flat and devoid of the necessary urgency.

SACS’s go-to man fullback Duran Koevort sparked them to life briefly with another one of his trademark runs but when one of his forwards was stripped on the next phase, it was normal service resumed with Rondebosch clicking into gear and moving the ball through the hands beautifully.

Right on half-time SACS all but handed the match to Rondebosch. Time was up and all SACS had to do was hoof the ball into touch but they didn’t. Rondebosch counter-attacked centre Sebastian Bauriedl scored. Scrumhalf Ishma-eel Safodien converted and Rondebosch jogged in seventeen points to the good.

The second half was entertaining with play moving this way and that but the teams only added one try each. SACS were attacking up the left on sixteen minutes only for an errant offload to be snapped up by Tredoux who ran the length of the field to score his second try. Flyhalf Kian Davis converted and Rondebosch were well clear.

SACS struck back three minutes later when their hard-working No.8 Brent van Niekerk scored a brilliant solo try but it was too little too late as the teams played out the final fifteen minutes with no further score added.

Both teams have the long weekend off before finishing their seasons with their traditional fixtures against Wynberg and Bishops respectively.
