Rondebosch Host Cape Schools
There are 10 schools taking part – five from the Eastern Cape and five from the Western Cape.
The Cape Schools rugby tournament was the brainchild of Ray Connellan to bring together schools from the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape. He was a man of the Eastern Cape who spent 40 years in the Western Cape. He went to school at Selborne College in East London and then to university in Grahamstown before teaching at Queen's in Queenstown. In 1973 he came to Wynberg Boys' High where he stayed for 25 years. In 1980 the first Cape Schools festival took place with the intention of holding it every second year.
Connellan was a schoolmaster and an eager rugby man. He did much for rugby at Wynberg and indeed in the Western Province as a whole. He died in 2013 at the age of 75.
This year it is being held on two match days, 1 and 3 July. The matches will be played on Rugby A Field at Rondebosch.
