Rugby as a teaching aid

There is a frequently belief that rugby teaches many lessons in life. Here it is teaching many lessons in a school.

A school in Caerphilly County Borough is going rugby mad on Thursday to mark their inclusion in the Welsh Rugby Union School of Rugby scheme.

The School of Rugby status has been awarded to 22 schools throughout Wales who show a commitment to developing and promoting rugby as part of the curriculum and with the competitive fixtures they fulfil.

To illustrate this, Lewis Boys' School, a comprehensive school in Pengam, will use rugby as a vehicle to teach every discipline throughout Thursday's timetable.

Every subject is taking part in the event, from learning about the construction of the Stade de France in French to linking sport and science, discussing rugby articles in English and using rugby data in maths.

There will also be coaching and rugby skills with former Wales hooker Lloyd Burns and Welsh Rugby Union's development officers alongside the school's physical education staff.

Former Wales and British & Irish Lions player John Dawes, a former pupil of the school, will present the official plaque to the school in morning assembly.
