SA U18 Sevens team

The South African Rugby Union has announced the names of 12 Under-18 players to make up the Sevens team to represent South Africa at the African Youth Games this week.

The Games take place in Gaberone, Botswana, from 20 to 26 May 2014.

In the squad of 12 there are three from Paul Roos, two from Glenwood and the others from seven individual schools. Eight of the 12 were at the 2013 Craven Week, Edwill van der Merwe and Tshepiso Mahasha at the Academy Week and Eddie Venter at the Grant Khomo Week. Only Ivan Kunz was not at a national week last year.

Flank PJ Toerien and scrumhalf Marco Janse van Vuuren were chosen for SA schools last year.

The squad is: Eduan Keyter (Affies),  PJ Toerein (Garsfontein), Tshepiso Mahasha  (Ben Vorster),  Luigy van Jaarsveld (Marlow), Jaco Coetzee (Glenwood), Morné Joubert (Glenwood), Marco Janse van Vuuren (Transvalia), Herschel Jantjies (Paul Roos), Edwill van der Merwe (Paul Roos), Edrich Venter (Paul Roos),  Grant Williams (Paarl Gim),  Ivan Kunz (Tygerberg).

The coach is Gavin Beresford of Hoërskool Tygerberg, the current Western Province High Schools Sevens coach

Marius Schoeman, the manager of the SARU Sevens Academy, said the current crop of players should give good account of themselves in Gaberone.

He said: “These players were earmarked at the 2013 Coca-Cola Youth Week tournaments and we monitored also players in various other tournaments, as well as watching many schools matches. The next step for these players will be to come into contention for intake into the SA Sevens Academy, which is our main feeder for the Springbok Sevens squad."

The team is in Johannesburg, to leave on Tuesday for Gaberone.
