SACS beat Brackenfell
Match Report
SACS beat Brackenfell 12-5 on a lovely winter's morning in Newlands on Saturday. It was a game of two halves.
SACS dominated the first half and should have put the match to bed by the interval. Despite scoring two good tries SACS were again guilty of missing good scoring opportunities, at least three going abegging because of poor option-taking out wide.
As has become the norm for SACS, Dean Holland opened the scoring with a long-range effort. From broken play near the half-way line he streaked clear and beat two would-be defenders to score.
After some more good play and pressure SACS scored again. With the Brackenfell defence up quickly, centre Warwick Denman chipped over for wing Ishmat Fakier to gather and score. Tim Carr converted to leave SACS well placed at 12-nil up at the break.
In the second half Brackenfell changed their tactics to good effect and used the powerful pack to keep SACS on the back foot. Driven on by their vocal and vociferous support Brackenfell dominated territory and possession. They scored after numerous raids on the SACS line, outside centre Richard van Huysteen eventually crashing over.
SACS had a few decent attacking opportunities in the second half but were left holding on for dear life at the end. SACS’s discipline let them down and the penalty count mounted against them, making the final quarter a nerve-wracking affair for the home supporters.
SACS held on though through sheer guts and determination. They will need all their guts and a bit more finesse if they are to topple Paarl Gim at home this Saturday.
