SACS win well at Newlands

The SACS 1st XV beat Brackenfell 25-nil in the WP Schools Rugby Day at Newlands on Tuesday night.

Despite being heavily penalised SACS managed to score five unanswered tries in an entertaining encounter.

Even though SACS were on the wrong side of a 17-4 penalty count, which is massive in a 20-minute-a-side match, they still managed to dominate territory and possession. Brackenfell had two good opportunities to score but solid SACS defence, a feature of their play, kept Brackenfell at bay.

SACS opened the scoring after a good counterattack which led to a try for lock Adam de Calvalho. Later in the half SACS produced a promising maul from which the backs struck, leading to a try for fullback Tando Rudah. The score was 10-nil at the interval.

After the break SACS scored three more tries. Two were as a result of great individual breaks. For the first flank Luke van der Smit caught an overthrown line-out and ran forty metres to score.

Scrumhalf and captain Cameron Calder then broke around the fringes on the halfway line and beat the fullback only to be caught just short of the line. Flyhalf Chris Smith gathered the ruck ball and dived over to score. Smith got the final try as well after a quick tap penalty.

Overall it was a decent start to the season for SACS but they have much to improve on before the face the very strong Grey High team in Port Elizabeth this Saturday afternoon (24 March).

Other results:
Paul Roos and Paarl Gim drew 5-all
Paarl Boishaai beat Tygerberg High 15-nil
