Schoeman Laubscher Oudtshoorn High School captain
Player Profile
There is always great enthusiasm when the Kwaggas and the Struisies meet, as they do this Saturday in an FNB Classic Clash. Schoeman Laubscher captains the Struisies.
Oudtshoorn High School face off against the high-riding Outeniqua team in a televised derby on Saturday afternoon. Schoeman Laubscher will lead out the hosts in a confident mood.
Born in Oudtshoorn on 3 February 1988 Schoeman attended Laerskool Wesbank. He played wing in junior school before moving to flank in Grade 8. Currently in Grade 12 he is the head of the hostel and is vice-head of the matric committee. Despite playing in his second year in the 1st XV he was unable to emulate his father and make the South Western Districts Craven Week team. He hopes to study accounting at Stellenbosch next year.
When we spoke to Schoeman on Tuesday he was not sure whether he would be playing lock or No.8 on Saturday. Naturally he prefers No.8 as his speed around the park is his strength. His other strength is his ability in the line-outs, hence his ability to double as a lock. His favourite player is Schalk Burger, not only because of his play, but also because they wear the same type of boots.
Oudtshoorn are having a very good season and have only lost two games so far. Their best win to date has been a 77-3 drubbing of the touring Posmasburg team. They have a very fast and unpredictable backline to whom they will be looking to for inspiration on Saturday.
Outeniqua are one of the top teams in the country this year and despite playing away they must still be firm favourites. Outeniqua won the derby comfortably last year but Schoeman is confident that at home and with their good record so far this season his team stand at least a 50/50 chance.
The FNB Classic Clash is always the highlight of the season and the year for Oudtshoorn. It would always be an honour to lead your team out in the derby but with the game been televised live on Supersport Schoeman feels especially honoured.
