School go up to College

They first played each other in 1910 – in Pietermaritzburg when College won 5-0. In 1914 DHS beat College for the first time, also 5-0 but this time in Durban.

They both have a lot in common, enough to make victory important. It was the College headmaster who took rugby to DHS when he became the headmaster of DHS in 1910. The great Skonk Nicholson, who did so much to develop the greatness of College rugby, went to school at DHS and the legendary Bill Payne of DHS went to school at College.

This year so far DHS have been doing slightly better than College. DHS are ranked 16th on the Schools Top 20 whereas College have just got into the small group under the Top 20 who are putting pressure on these ranked above them.

DHS have played 10 matches. They lost four of their first five and then won all of the next five, most recently beating Kearsney at Botha's Hill.

College have also lost four of their 10 matches. After losing 39-20 to KES they then beat Michaelhouse last Saturday 49-31.

College have done noticeably better than DHS against the two opponents they have in common.

Grey PE beat DHS 50-17 and College 27-19

DHS beat Michaelhouse 29-24 and College beat them 49-31.

DHS have four players who were at Craven Week last year – fullback Cham Zondeki, wing Tonderai Ndudzo, scrumhalf Sandile Nohamba and outstanding flank Phendulani Buthelezi. Both Nohamba and Buthelezi played for South Africa Under-18 Sevens.

The match, a Classic Clash, will be televised live on Supersport, Channel 210.
