It is a long weekend, all right this weekend, made longer because the actual holiday is on a Tuesday, and so there is less rugby than usual, none it seems in the Western Cape except for the provincial matches in Oudtshoorn as preparation for the four national weeks next month and a quiet time in the Free State.
That said, there were two significant results – Kingswood's one-point K-Day win, their first since 2011 which came after 17 years' defeats. In 2011 they also won by one point.
Then in Pietermaritzburg Michaelhouse's pack out played that of Maritzburg College, one would imagine for the first time ever, and gave College their second big beating of the year.
They are both ancient matches. Kingswood have been playing St Andrew's since 1898 and Michaelhouse have been playing College since 1901, first winning in 1902.
