Recent results have been weird. At least to older folk.
In the past scoring 20 points or more was a rare feat.
Now it is common place to get scores in the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s and even over 100.
There are no centuries in these results, but two over 90.
In those remote days, scoring 20 or more meant that you had won.
Not so anymore. In this set of results there are 15 losers who scored over 20 and even three losers who scored over 30.
In 1912 the Springboks scored a world record of 38 points against Ireland. Ireland scored 0.
In 1951 the Springboks beat their own world record by scoring 44 points. Scotland scored nil.
Those were days when 8-3 meant a comfortable victory.
This week we have teams who score comfortable victories while their opponents score several points themselves – 46-25, 48-22, 52-14, 52-15, 57-14, 58-5, 69-16 62-14 70-10 and 82-15.
It is strange, even making allowance for the increased value of the try. There is no other law that seems that it could have this effect. Maybe it's climate change!
