Schools Top 20 - June 2
The top 12 teams all won last week. In fact only five of the Top 20 teams lost – EG Jansen, Jeppe, Rondebosch, Outeniqua and Waterkloof.
The Waterkloof defeat was something of a surprise as they lost to Helpmekaar – the first Afrikaans-medium private school in South Africa.
Helpmekaar have increasingly been playing stronger opposition, including Waterkloof, Affies, Grey PE and Michaelhouse. They have won eight of their 13 matches, including victories over Die Brandwag, St Andrew's and, the biggest of them all, Waterkloof who were ranked 18th on the Top 20.
Oakdale's victory over Outeniqua in George settles, for the time being, who the top side in South Western Districts is.
Relevant scores this week:
Helpmekaar vs Waterkloof, 17-16
Oakdale vs Outeniqua, 25-17
Paul Roos vs Rondebosch, 32-7
Westville vs Glenwood 18-17
Affies vs Jeppe, 63-26
Bishops vs Wynberg, 26-19
Grey PE vs St Andrew's, 36-22
Michaelhouse vs St John's 37-3
Monument vs Dr EG Jansen, 32-26
Did not play: Grey College, Paarl Gim and Maritzburg College
The upshot of examining all this and other scores is that Jeppe and Michaelhouse have swapped places. Waterkloof and Rondebosch have dropped off the Top 20, replaced by Grey PE and Bishops.
